And years ago when almost a boy I had some photographs in Rochdale Art Gallery as part of an exhibition rather grandly entitled something like contemporary Abstract Photography in England and Germany". I behaved badly and fell out of a toilet window. The chap who organised it had told me I was a genius of the eyeball and he would arange many joint exhibitions for us both. Soon afterwards he changed his name to Karen and became a receptionist who knew nothing about art. In 1991 I decided the world needed to know what I did at home. The owners of Afflecks Palace, a big building full of little shops in Manchester loaned me a space on the top floor. Obviously I called it "The oblong Gallery" and filled it up. Here are the posters and some ages from the booklets I made to accompany its three exhibitions. It shut a year and a half later when the police explained to the management that theyd be really pleased if the Oblong gallery went away. |
